Funny motherfucker. Great American. Comedian. Podcaster. Pioneer. Inventor of the thousand-hour comedy special. What him and Lee did is cool. Really an honor to have gotten to do this article.
Backstory - There is a typo in this article. I left out a comma somewhere. Then the editor left out a comma somewhere and maybe took out a word or two. Editors are the unseen hand of almost all print media. That's not always a good thing. Joey Diaz never said that he saw Don Johnson, Bill Murray, and Hunter S. Thompson in the Woody Creek Tavern all at the same time. He said that he saw them all in there, two at the same time, and one at another time. I have this interview recorded on audio actually (with permission, Florida law). That was the print version. Then instead of using some other more logical method, the High Times used OCR technology to scan their print versions and extract the text for online, a mistake, because OCR is an imperfect technology that results in more typos.
(UPDATE 2025: High Times crashed their company through investments in dispensaries and whatever else not long after the article was published in 2020. Recently a new investor bought a bunch of High Times assets. I contacted him or his people and they are going to fix the article).
One of the funniest thing to me about this guy is that many of his stories are so out there they sound made up, but maybe he's actually telling the truth. It's impossible to know and it doesn't matter anyway. He's a hilarious comedian making fun of the world. I think that is why he will sometimes say, "You couldn't write this shit," and he's right. I can write my shit, but only he can write his shit.
Shout out to Mr. Diaz and much respect and thanks to him for all the laughs and positive motivational speaking and thought provoking work he does. He is a true original and his speech patterns and vocabulary are extremely unpredictable as are his life stories. Great American.
